NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Helps Ensure Deployed Sailors' Votes Count
The NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Norfolk Regional Navy Mail Center recently worked to ensure sailors deployed in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility had their voices heard in this year's elections, coordinating the receipt and processing of their absentee ballots.
According to Tom Wilson, regional postal program manager at NAVSUP FLC Norfolk, the command worked with CENTCOM, Military Sealift Command, Commander, Task Force 53 and Air Mobility Command (AMC) to track and receive hundreds of ballots that arrived via an AMC flight.
"Thanks to the opportunities provided via AMC flights through Norfolk with flights to and from Diego Garcia and Djibouti, NAVCENT (U.S. Naval Forces Central Command) organized a coordinated effort to use this resource to expedite getting the absentee ballots into the mainstream much faster," Wilson said.
The ballots were hand-delivered by a CTF 53 representative and immediately transported to the mail center, where personnel performed rigorous quality assurance checks, including inspecting that the ballots are sealed, in good condition and bear a clear, legible postmark.
Wilson noted that for most of the mail center team, performing this task carries deep personal meaning.
"Most of us are or were at the pointy end of the spear once in our careers and can relate our experiences to separation from family and our right to civic responsibilities in casting our vote," he said.
Handling absentee ballots is nothing new for the RNMC team; personnel provide the same services for voters at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay during every election cycle.
“Our team at RNMC Norfolk proven once again that distance is no barrier to democracy,” said Operations Department Deputy Director, Tony Ting. “I am immensely proud of our civilian and military members who worked tirelessly to ensure that those defending our freedom had their own voices heard.”
